We gathered questions that you guys wanted to ask our resident Color Expert Tarra Kruper. Well the answers are in. Hold on to your roots…this is gonna be good!

1.Should I attempt coloring my roots at home or is it best to leave it?

I think in most instances, you are better to just leave your haircolor alone as long as you can. That way, you can avoid doing any damage to your hair that may result in a color correction down the road. I understand the struggle! As a natural brunette, I have some serious roots right now too.

Consider temporary fixes, like root cover up sprays and powders! I absolutely love Wella Insta Recharge Root Concealer. It’s an easy to apply powder and comes in 5 shades. Another favorite is Oribe Airbrush Root Touch-up Spray  It smells really good, looks natural and covers well!

2. I’m still working via Video Conference, my gray is not ok. I can’t go any longer like this. What should I do?

If you can’t wait, go for a shade that says “Demi-Permanent” haircolor. Demi-Permanent haircolor will gently blend gray, contains no ammonia, and will get you by without causing an expensive color correction when your back in the salon!

To be safe, aim for a color 1 shade lighter than your usual color.

***Demi-permanent color will not lift your hair lighter. I’d recommend not trying to go lighter without a professional

3. When should I expect to get back in the salon?

This is an unprecedented time and unfortunately for us, there’s no instruction manual on “going back to work after quarantine.” Every stylist or salon is going to handle it differently.

You should stay on the look out for updates from your salon or stylist. If you haven’t received any updates just yet, I guarantee you it’s not because your stylist isn’t thinking about you! It may be because they honestly still don’t know. The next time you check in with your stylist, let them know that you’re looking forward to scheduling with them when they begin prebooking.

Some people, including myself, are hesitant to book appointments right now because they don’t know when everything will be “back to normal”. They may be trying to avoid giving false hope or inconveniencing clients with rebooking. Please be patient, we really really can’t wait to see you!

For my clients, I’ve decided to make a list in the order of people who already had scheduled appointments that were canceled because of quarantine. Then, clients who are reaching out to me for prebooking are also going on a list.

4. What do you predict will be the color trends for the rest of 2020?

My prediction is that people will be going back or closer to their NATURAL COLOR! There, I said it! Enhancing someone’s natural color has always been my favorite thing to do. Low-maintenance looks that grow out nicely, subtle highlights that compliment my clients skin tone and sun-kissed looks. I think people’s priorities are going to really change after this quarantine. We’ve all been trapped in our places and forced to embrace our natural beauty- roots and all! People will want to be out enjoying their lives and not committed to high maintenance looks that keep them in the salon all the time.

I think all the trends will be more natural- Makeup, hair, nails, etc. I don’t think gray coverage will ever go out of style, but my approach to grey coverage has been more of a natural blending that keeps the hair looking dimensional.

5. What are 3 products or tools you can’t survive without?!

Ghd Glide Easily my #1! It’s a hotbrush- so it looks like a brush but it’s an iron too! It can smooth flyaways and straighten hair with a few passes. It’s amazing!

Ghd platinum+ Styler It can straighten and curl / wave your hair. Plus, it’s so pretty.

Ghd Curve Classic Curl Iron A 1-inch iron I think everyone needs a great curling iron! I love this size because depending on the size of your sections, you can get right curls or loose waves.

I love GHD tools because they only heat up to 365 degrees. Hot enough to lock in the style but not too hot to damage your hair or your color. Also, there are so many tutorials out there on YouTube and Instagram that teach you how to use their products!
